When we compare God to a watchmaker - can we understand how he created life?

The argument that if you see a watch you conclude there must be a watchmaker. If you see something complex in nature you conclude there is a creator God. Now a watch maker takes pieces created by either people, and embles them using a microscope, tweezers, screwdriver, and significant manual dexterity. He works in a workshop and you have evidence of his watch making from the tools, raw materials and broken parts that were thrown away. I wonder if by the same ogy you can see any evidence of "God the creators" tools, raw materials, failed attempts and if you can identify his workshop, to help us understand better how he created life on earth.
