Post-tonsillectomy bleeding?

My doctor said it's normal for a little bit of bleeding, but he didn't say what to do when this happens? I started bleeding earlier, and I just stood over the toilet and kept spitting and gargling until it was gone. Is that what I'm supposed to do? Any other suggestions?
